Automated Updated Data Goes to the Field at Alliant Energy

Midwest utility Alliant Energy sees data synchronization technology as core to more gains in field crew efficiencies and productivity; integrated technologies of GIS leaders Miner & Miner and Tadpole-Cartesia lay the foundation for automated transmission of data updates to field crews

Carlsbad, CA & Fort Collins, CO -- Field mapping software leader Tadpole-Cartesia and Miner & Miner, a world-leading developer and implementer of the award-winning ArcFM™ Solution for utilities, today jointly announced the successful pre-implementation trials of their combined technologies at Alliant Energy to automate the transmission of geospatial maintenance and revision data to field crews.

This project is the first to be completed by Miner & Miner and Tadpole-Cartesia with a major utility since announcing a strategic alliance and technology partnership earlier this year. Its success now paves the way for Alliant to extend its rollout of the ArcFM Solution to include mobile and disconnected field units, using Tadpole's bolt-on GeoSync data synchronization modules.

“Mobile GIS has been one of Alliant Energy's most successful uses of GIS technology, making a frontline impact on operations. But it was a solution with a problem … the lack of an automation tool to provide revisions to the field crews,” says Ted Wadzinski, Alliant Energy's Team Leader, GIS Systems and Services. “In the past, we sent out CDs containing a complete data set with each update. In addition, there was no capability of receiving updates from the field units.”

Wadzinski continues: “We've now completed a proof-of-concept of Tadpole's GeoSync software. Its ability to incrementally synchronize data in small packets of changes could allow Alliant to provide updates over the WAN and eliminate the process of burning CDs. In addition, we envision the capability of receiving updates back from the field crews. Tadpole's GeoSync software can dramatically improve our mobile GIS program by improving the currency of our data and allowing field users to make updates in the field and feeding them back to the central database.”
