The Power Commission of the City of Saint John Chooses GIS by ESRI
Toronto, Ontario -- The Power Commission of the City of Saint John (Saint John Energy), Saint John, New Brunswick (NB), has selected ESRI’s ArcGIS software as their enterprise geographic information system (GIS), and ESRI Canada to implement and support the GIS. The GIS is a part of Saint John Energy’s overall Integrated Enterprise Application which also includes: Management Information System (MIS) and a Customer Information System (CIS).
I am extremely excited that many clients in the utility industry are moving to the ArcGIS platform, said Alex Miller, President, ESRI Canada. ArcGIS is ideal for the utility environment as the data structure, the geodatabase, has the ability to customize feature types for modeling real world behaviour. We are pleased to have Saint John Energy as our newest utility client, and we look forward to successfully implementing and supporting their GIS.
Saint John Energy is a municipal electric utility that has been serving the City since 1922. The focus of the utility has been the efficient delivery of electricity to local consumers. As a non-generating utility, its primary responsibility is the distribution of electricity and customer service for approximately 35,000 customers.
Saint John Energy will have a common, well-integrated enterprise solution that will support our overall Integrated Enterprise Application, which includes CIS, MIS, and GIS, said Darin Lamont, Manager of Engineering, Saint John Energy. This integrated approach will help us to meet current and future departmental needs.
The Saint John Energy Commission chose ESRI’s ArcGIS platform consisting of ArcInfo, ArcSDE, and ArcView. They also selected Miner & Miner’s Enterprise ArcFM, Designer, and DistOps. We are delighted to have Saint John Energy join our ArcFM and Designer community, said Paul Snook, VP of Sales and Marketing, Miner & Miner. ESRI Canada’s extensive experience further expands our ability to serve clients and potential customers with our state-of-the-art technology to benefit utilities’ bottom line.
ESRI’s GIS will provide a platform for compatible data sharing with outside agencies for import and export for initial data collection, and on-going updates and data sharing, added Mr. Lamont. The outside agencies include City of Saint John, Province of New Brunswick, NBTel, NB Power, Electrical Contractors, and Survey firms.
ArcSDE and the geodatabase provide a centralized mechanism for managing geographic information in a relational database management system (RDBMS). ArcSDE enables multi-user access and editing of the enterprise GIS database. It also provides tools for managing versions of the data for "what-if" scenario modeling, and tracking historical changes to the database over time.
This contract will fulfill Saint John Energy’s goal of establishing a corporate GIS software platform. ESRI Canada will also support Saint John Energy with the installation and implementation of the ArcGIS suite of tools.
Saint John Energy is faced with issues such as restructuring and the imminent introduction of natural gas to the New Brunswick marketplace. Increased competition means more focus on customer retention, finding new sources of revenue, and maintaining competitive rates for the customer.
The Integrated Enterprise Application including MIS, GIS, and the CIS will play a significant role in Saint John Energy’s efforts to be able to improve service quality and operational efficiency, and measure progress against internal targets and industry standards, concluded Mr. Lamont.
