Miner & Miner Completes
Software Implementation for ONEOK

Fort Collins, CO -- Miner & Miner has completed the implementation of an automated mapping suite of products for Kansas Gas Service (KGS), a division of ONEOK, Inc. ESRI’s ArcGIS and ArcIMS and Miner & Miner’s ArcFM will enable the gas distribution units to track facilities and land-based information. This will include analysis and production reporting of pipeline information, inventory, and geographics.

“The software offers our users a thousand times more flexibility than our previous system. The open environment now allows us to create one centralized seamless database,” said Kenton Graber, ONEOK’s information technology development manager.

Currently more than 40 employees are using the new software applications, and that number is expected to increase to 150 by the end of the first quarter of 2002. The software allows editors to edit and maintain the KGS distribution network. In addition, first-line supervisors, engineers, and dispatchers may query, analyze, and view the ongoing operations of the network. An ArcIMS solution is also in place, which allows all employees access to the geographic information system (GIS) software using the company’s Intranet.

ONEOK, Inc., based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a diversified natural gas company involved in production, processing, gathering, storage, and transmission in the midcontinent areas of the United States. ONEOK’s Kansas Gas Service provides clean, reliable natural gas to more than 630,000 customers in 340 communities in Kansas. Its Oklahoma Natural Gas Co. (ONG) provides natural gas service to approximately 800,000 customers in Oklahoma.

The improvements to the KGS distribution operations were completed by a project team that included Miner & Miner, ESRI, M.J. Harden Associates, and ONEOK. M.J. Harden was responsible for the data conversion from CableCAD. Miner & Miner and ESRI provided software and implementation services. The project included database design, configuration, and some customized coding for a custom login and redlining capabilities. The deployment has been phased to allow adequate training and knowledge transfer as more users are brought online.

Now that the software conversion has been completed for KGS, ONG is specifying the project steps needed for a similar data conversion from AutoCAD to ArcGIS/ArcFM. Implementation will begin in 2002. By the time ONG completes its project, the number of those using the software to enhance gas distribution flexibility and database improvement at ONEOK is expected to double.

“The implementation has improved the business processes and capabilities of ONEOK and will likely advance its competitive position,” said Jeff Meyers, president of Miner & Miner.
