Hydro One Implementing Mobile Designer
Significant Gains in Productivity and Reduced Costs Realized with Mobile
Fort Collins, CO -- Hydro One Networks continues to enhance its current ArcFM Solution with Miner & Miner’s Mobile Designer product. The decision follows the successful deployment of Designer for the desktop environment in September 2003. The mobile project began at the end of October 2003 and is scheduled for a March 2004 rollout.
Hydro One, based in Ontario, Canada, serves 75 percent of the Ontario province and more than 1.2 million metered customers, making them one of the largest electricity transmission and distribution systems in North America. The utility chose Mobile Designer for its ability to create full designs, place equipment consistently, produce cost estimates, and generate customer contracts in the field. The designs will be synched with the server geodatabase and followed through to as-builting and completion.
“Through the Mobile enterprise system, we can take advantage of standards and templates in our designs and cost estimates and do so in less time. By having mobile design tools in the hands of our field workforce, we can provide better service to our customers at a reduced cost,” said John Marshall, P.Eng., Lead Business Analyst for the Designer Implementation at Hydro One. “Because of the vast territory we cover and our large number of customers, we have a workforce of more than two hundred design technicians working from about 50 sites scattered across the province who will use Mobile Designer. Mobile will increase productivity and provide more accurate cost recovery.”
In March 2003, Hydro One selected Miner & Miner and ESRI to provide an integrated design system for the desktop. The utility chose Designer to improve the asset management and design process of its distribution assets, and to provide a solid foundation for building an enterprise GIS by consolidating their various business practices onto a single unified platform.
Since the initial desktop rollout in September 2003, Hydro One has designed and built more than 50 designs using ArcFM and Designer. Hydro One plans to roll out Mobile Designer to more than 200 users across the entire province of Ontario over the next three months, covering a 122,400 km distribution system.
