Kissimmee Utility Authority Selects the Entire ArcFM™ Solution
Former Gentry site converts to Miner & Miner technology
Fort Collins, CO -- Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) has chosen Miner & Miner's ArcFM technology to modernize its business operations and improve facilities asset management. KUA completed data conversion for the project in-house in only 3 months. In July, KUA went live with ArcFM and they are currently in the process of completing the implementation of the remaining ArcFM applications, including Designer, Responder, Network Adapter, Conduit Manager, and ArcFM Viewer.
With a total generating capacity of 477 megawatts (MW), KUA is Florida's 6th largest community-owned utility, serving 61,000 electric, water, and Internet customers in five Central Florida counties. The utility owns, operates, and manages the municipal electric system established by the City of Kissimmee more than a century ago. In addition, KUA owns and operates the Roy E. Hansel Generating Station and the Cane Island Power Park.
KUA first began using GIS to manage its assets in the 1980s. In 1993, they made the move to GenMap and for several years operated as one of its premier sites. However, following the acquisition of Gentry Systems, KUA was left with a system that was no longer supported. In 2003, the decision was made to update the system to a technology with proven success and a solid and long-standing history in the utility industry. After a period of research and review of the various GIS technology platforms, the open architecture and history of success of the ESRI/Miner & Miner solution helped make KUA's decision. In addition, Miner & Miner offered the entire suite of products KUA needed to replace GIS, Design, and Outage Management on a single, unified platform.
Says KUA's GIS Manager, Ken Beville, The ArcFM Solution was the most obvious choice for a number of reasons. All of the products appeared to be built on a solid, logical foundation and have the ability to be extended by our own programming staff.
Taking on the data conversion themselves and being able to implement the system out-of-the-box were two important considerations for the utility. KUA felt that because they use the maps on a daily basis, they were the most qualified to take on the migration. The technical staff at KUA also felt they would come away from the project with a comprehensive understanding of not only the software, but of the implementation effort, leaving them in a position where they would feel empowered to move the software forward. It has also enabled them to better understand the remaining Miner & Miner software applications they are now deploying.
KUA plans to have the entire ArcFM Solution rolled out by December, and as a participant in the Responder Early Adopter Program, they will be among the initial utilities to deploy Responder based on ArcGIS 8.
