Brownsville PUB Integrates Miner & Miner’s Designer and Azteca System’s Cityworks

Brownsville Public Utilities Board Implements GIS-based Applications to Manage Construction and Operations

Fort Collins, CO -- The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB), a municipal utility servicing more than 52,000 retail customers, went into phased production on July 1st with Miner & Miner’s (M&M) Designer integrated with Azteca System’s Cityworks. Designer and Cityworks provide BPUB an integrated environment for managing work orders, construction design, automated layouts and job cost estimates.

BPUB was among the first utilities to deploy ESRI’s ArcGIS 8 and M&M’s ArcFM solution to provide a basic data model and data maintenance functionality. In June 2003, BPUB added Designer for improved workflow and design. Brownsville is the southernmost city in Texas, located on the border of Mexico, and has provided electric, water, and wastewater to the City and surrounding areas for nearly a century.

BPUB also selected Cityworks to support maintenance activities and new construction. Cityworks and Designer were integrated within the ESRI ArcGIS framework to support the complete work order design and maintenance process. A work order is created in Cityworks and transferred into Designer to initiate a functional design. Compatible units defined in Cityworks are used in Designer to develop the sketch and produce a cost estimate. The automated process allows for updating GIS spatial data as changes are made to the electrical and water/wastewater distribution facilities that are designed and installed as part of work order. The combined project was completed in phases over eleven months and supports 54 design and maintenance staff.

“The implementation and integration of Designer and Cityworks with our ESRI GIS will significantly smooth out a formerly tedious manual process. BPUB hopes that this solution will improve work flow and provide more accurate data with better costing to the GIS and fixed assets system,” said Eddy Hernandez, Director of Customer & Information Services for BPUB.
