Eugene Water and Electric Board Extends Enterprise ArcFM™ GIS with Integrated Fiber Manager
Telvent’s fiber optic solution uses utility’s established geodatabase, allows mobile reporting
Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced that the Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) is in full production with the company’s Fiber Manager fiber optic solution. EWEB reports the advantages of using Fiber Manager, particularly its mobile capabilities, with the ArcFM™ Geographic Information System (GIS) Solution for creating and maintaining network information for its fiber optic system.
EWEB, Oregon’s largest customer-owned utility, provides electricity, water, and steam services and fiber telecommunications to customers across the Eugene area. It has used Telvent’s open-architecture ArcFM GIS - based on the ESRI ArcGIS® platform - to manage its electric and water assets since 2006. After initial implementation, the Geographics team integrated Telvent’s Responder outage management system (OMS) for its electric network and most recently deployed the system’s Fiber Manager extension.
EWEB now is storing fiber optic network information in its centralized geodatabase - data that previously were held in various types of CAD drawings, spreadsheets, word processing documents, even hand-drawn sketches. Tracing a single fiber circuit might have required reference to several repositories of data and drawings prior to the implementation - and be subject to error. Now, design engineers can clarify a circuit question in seconds using the application’s Fiber Trace tools. Schematic flexibility allows them to specify which utility layers are viewed to assure designs compatible with existing lines and mains.
According to Dennis McGrath, GIS Analyst at EWEB, “The success of the project was clear once we implemented the mobile component of Fiber Manager, which lets our communications and splicing crews visit splice enclosures and dynamically create reports for that site. We’ve found Fiber Manager to be the right scale of solution for a system of our size, with about 120 miles of fiber, to efficiently connect and expand.”
